Expired License

Overview

California architect licenses expire at midnight on the last day of the birth month in odd-numbered years. An expired license not renewed within 30 days is subject to a $100 delinquency fee.

Holders of an expired license may not legally practice architecture in California.

A license that has been expired for less than five years is subject to the renewal fees shown below for the noted renewal periods and the delinquency fee (if expired more than 30 days).

Renewal Fee Chart

Renewal Period Renewal Fee
2023-2025 $400 (effective 7/1/23)
2021-2023 $300
2019-2021 $300

The renewal fee owed is calculated by adding the expired renewal periods and the delinquency fee (if expired more than 30 days). Information about current renewal requirements can be found on the Renewing a License webpage.

A license expired five or more years becomes nonrenewable. An individual with a nonrenewable license must meet the Board’s current license requirements and apply for a new license to legally practice architecture in California.

If you have any questions about renewing an expired license, please contact the Board for assistance.
